What IS naive is assuming that if the software developer does not know
how to better design the user interface, then it is just an impossible
task.

IMO, the fact that mencoder's UI is clumsy is not due to the
complexity of the domain.  It is due to complexity of the domain
COMBINED with the fact that the designers, apparently, have very
little experience with user-friendly design...
