I tried it now. And here are my findings:

vstrict not mentioned in options => Green boxes
vstrict=0: No green boxes (!)
vstrict=1: No green boxes (of course)

My hunch is that it has to do with this little patch:

(it looks to me that the lavc_param_strict parameter was changed to 
default to -1 in this patch, and not 0 as before).

What makes me really puzzled is that in libavcodecs/utils.c, the line 
defining the "strict" option says

(my version, as mentioned before, is MEncoder 1.0rc1-3.2.2).
