What's the best way to convert DVD titles to MPEG using mencoder?

Here's what I'm doing now (seems kludgy, even using pipes where possible):

DVD ==(mencoder ... -oac pcm -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mjpeg)==> AVI

AVI ==(lav2yuv)==> YUV ==(mpeg2enc)==> M1V

AVI ==(lav2wav)==> WAV ==(mp2enc)==> MP2

M1V + MP2 ==(mplex)==> MPEG
