I assume that's a recent svn checkout?

And what's the source file format? Can you seek in it normally when you just 
play the file? If Nicolas George's suggestion (mplayer fubar.avi -ss 
360 -frames 5 -vo pnm) does not work, could you post the output of 
mplayer -v fubar.avi -ss 360 -frames 1 -vo pnm ?
