Ok, I reencoded the file in a single pass with vqscale=2, and it went from:

-rw-r--r--  1 root root  6819032976 Nov 12 20:59 IdahoEdens.7.ts

to:

-rw-r--r--  1 root root 12250961610 Nov 24 02:58 IdahoEdens.avi

Yow.  What's going on?

It was copied as:

encoder -quiet -sws 2 -oac copy -ovc lavc -lavcopts 
vcodec=mpeg4:vqscale=2::aspect=16/9 -vf pp=hb/vb/dr/al/lb,crop=1920:1080 
-tsprog 7 -o /home/share/videos/IdahoEdens.avi 
/home/share/videos/IdahoEdens.7.ts
