mplayer and mencoder are using kb, kB, KB, MB and mb, and their
meaning are not always documented. That's my main issue.

As I already said, many coreutils have a switch for using either
system. Try 'ls -l --si' or 'df --si' for instance. That would be a
nice feature for mplayer / mencoder, and would make everyone happy.
