This may have something to do with decoding for playback and whatever
color conversions are done during the process. On Windows these days we
have a full YV12 chain so no color conversions at all.. I don't know if
mencoder goes RGB at some point, but that shouldn't incurr much of a
change. More importantly is playback though. On Windows there is a
variety of renderers, all have their advantages and pitfalls, and there
are those that tend to change the color somewhat. During previous codec
comparisons, I actually had to change the renderer because shots of
certain codecs had a different brightness level than shots of the
source. So, if you play the DVD in mplayer and the encoded content, and
they both have the same brightness level, I wouldn't worry about it. If
there was something wrong with mencoder, people would've found it (megui
used mencoder exclusively for encoding up until June).
