Updates seems like a terrible idea in the first place for this kind of
thing. They are a recipe for misunderstandings: somebody will have read
the original version and not noticed the update, somebody else will have
read the updated version and not be aware of the original.

The correct way to mark an update in a discussion is to say "I changed
my mind".

Can updates be disabled?

It is a good thing to do for normal mail too. I hope people have noticed
how much more pleasant to read are the mails from those of us who do
always trim our mails than the mails that are not trimmed.
