OK. This problem is specific to mplayer...with hardframedrop enabled, so the behaviour is as I would expect since hardframedrop does bad things to non-intra-frame sequences
Probably not a bug.

I cant reproduce this issue with ffmpeg 1.2.4 which i assume

is this specific to mplayer + ffmpeg 1.2.4 or can you also
