It does not matter much: this is quite a simple function, private and used
only once in the parser. If someday someone want to extend the syntax (very
unlikely), they can and will change the function to suit their needs, and
the result may be one of the versions suggested here or something else
entirely. I do not think it is any use speculating about it.
