First, please learn how to spell the project's name;-)
You send a patch, it gets reviewed, you make the requested changes, and after a
few iterations, your patch gets submitted.

This is not a question about patent issues, but about copyright.
Your submitted code should be released under LGPL, GPL or MIT license.

If "reference software" means "HD Photo Device Porting Kit", note that its
license explicitly forbids using the code in open source projects like FFmpeg.
