[DVDnav-discuss] frustration with rip-protected DVDs

Thank you. From what I can see from further reading, the answer to my
question, "Is it plausible that nothing in Debian 5 is capable of reading a
2003 Sony movie DVD" seems to be yes, pure Debian can never read typical DVDs
because for legal reasons, it doesn't include the decryption code. (It's a
pity the error messages are so far from saying that. A typical one, from
Gxine: "Error reading NAV packet".

It would seem www.debian-multimedia.org is an answer, though so far I have not
been able to use it. I can't find a word of instruction or description for
this repository/project and when I plow through the repository on my own, all
I see is a bunch of empty directories (but full indices). But I'll keep
trying -- that doesn't seem to be germane to libdvdnav.

I suppose somewhere there is a Linux distribution prepackaged with libdvdnav
and the rest of the required DVD reading software that one can just install in
a few steps.

Hey, one more question: Is there such a thing as an unencrypted DVD?
And if so, how might I get my hands on one for diagnostic purposes?
