I thought it was a good idea back then and after all the troubles we've been through, I agree even more today. On the one hand, we'd get the benefits of legal defense of the code. But on the other hand, some people might get pissed off if the FSF wants to be picky about GPL headers in files, etc., and maybe they would even say the patent-infringing code or binary-loader code in MPlayer is not GPL-compatible and thus we can't distribute MPlayer with this stuff. :) So, IMO it would require careful consideration and dialogue and negotiation with the FSF before we decided whether or not to make such a move. Sometimes the defense of the law isn't worth playing by its rules, and then anarchy is preferable. :) Rich From gabucino at mplayerhq.hu Fri Mar 5 17:44:04 2004 From: gabucino at mplayerhq.hu (Gabucino) Date: Fri, 5 Mar 2004 17:44:04 +0100 Subject: [MPlayer-G2-dev] dual licensing try 2 In-Reply-To: References: <20040222173830.0614E31818@mail.mplayerhq.hu> <20040223140615.GA32683@cube.dyndns.org> <20040223144643.GA3622@woodstock.localdomain> <20040223154631.GA11043@cube.dyndns.org> <20040223161801.GD4401@woodstock.localdomain> <20040223171405.GA14268@cube.dyndns.org> <20040223203426.GC5009@woodstock.localdomain> Message-ID: <20040305164404.GC1583@woodstock.localdomain> Diego Biurrun wrote: > You proposed assigning copyright to the FSF some time ago. Whether MPlayer can stand by itself, or it needs FSF's help. But can any of you come up with an outstanding FSF victory, which is persuasive enough to let a bunch of freedom+GPL maniac fellas reign over MPlayer's licenses? Right now my answer would be no. BTW I still don't know why are we discussing these sensitive matters on this public, archived mailing list (that doesn't exist for this purpose anyways) which is open to every firms and other abonimations out there.
