[MPlayer-dvb] Too many video packets in the buffer

Hi
I'm using mplayer to play a stream from a dvb capture card.
The system is ubuntu linux (feisty).
The quality of the TV signal is not great, so there can be occasional
corruption of audio / video, but it seems to work pretty well.

However, after running with no errors for anything up to a couple of
hours I get the messages:

"Your system is too slow..."

and lots of :

"Too many packets in the buffer..."

After a few seconds mplayer appears to recover but the audio and
video are out of sync by several seconds (the audio is ahead of the
video).
mplayer knows about the loss of sync because it shows it on the
status line, but it doesn't seem to be able to get back in sync.

So my questions are:

1. Is this typical or common behaviour with mplayer and streams?
2. Is the problem likely to be related to the quality of the dvb signal?
3. Is there anything I can do to get mplayer audio-video back in
sync after the "Too many packets..." error?

Many thanks for any help,

Paul
