tzap -r "ABC TV Melbourne"

seems to work.

dmm at trinity:~$ tzap -r "ABC TV Melbourne"
using '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0'
tuning to 753500000 Hz
status 01 | signal ffff | snr 80e8 | ber 0000066c | unc 00000000 |
status 1f | signal ffff | snr 8a78 | ber 0000158a | unc 00000000 |

status 1f | signal ffff | snr 87a8 | ber 00001241 | unc 00000000 |

status 1f | signal ffff | snr 9539 | ber 00000cc0 | unc 00000000 |

status 1f | signal ffff | snr 8dd8 | ber 00001542 | unc 00000000 |
FE_HAS_LOCK
status 1f | signal ffff | snr 86c8 | ber 00001665 | unc 00000000 |
FE_HAS_LOCK

mplayer /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0
Playing /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0.
Cache fill: 16.21% (1359872 bytes)

Then works.

At the same time mplayer dvb://ABC doesn't.
Playing dvb://ABC.
DVB CONFIGURATION IS EMPTY, exit
Failed to open dvb://ABC

The tzap and mplayer channel lists are different, so the names are
different, but pretty sure the channels are the same.

What does this mean? A bug in mplayer afterall?
