Strictly speaking, the colon here should be a semicolon, and the "They"
lowercase. According to my understanding, a colon is used (pretty much
exclusively) either preceding an example or preceding a list of items,
and this is neither.

(It's somewhat possible that my understanding might be wrong. The colon
is one of the pieces of standard punctuation which I have had the most
difficulty with.)
