i neither know the current status, but marillats packages
1. link against undistributable libfaad (claims to be GPL but contains non GPL
   clause)
2. uses shared libav*, ... even though thats not recommanded
3. depends on every obscure lib you can (or cannot) imagine [1]
4. i never installed marilliats mplayer package but if their quality matches
   that of his transcode packages i tried a few days ago to test transcodes
   deinterlacing filters then well uhm, his transcode package had random
   filters like tomsmocomp removed (probably as theres a tiny bug in the
   source and it didnt compile ...)
