Don't know what you're sure about, but what you suggest is wrong..

I interpret it as encoding all AVI files in a directory together, e.g.
making one big file out of multiple pieces.

That option still exists.  I'm not sure if it is obsolete now.  vo_fbdev
now has a device suboption that should do the same thing, but the man
page claims that -fb also applies to vo_directfb.  Since I don't know
DirectFB, I'm not sure whether it requires fbdev or not..

My local version sure does not remain in pause after a seek..
