Furthermore, they are washed out with bad contrast, blacks are gray rather than black, etc. I have played the videos in Windows 3.1 in DOSBox, and they look much better there.

OK, so now they don't flicker, but there's still an issue with RT21 (Indeo 2.1) encoded AVIs: there will be artifacts looking like vertical stripes. Take a look at the Video for Windows sample videos athttp://samples.mplayerhq.hu/V-codecs/RT21/vfw_samples/. Perhaps this is due to the encoding in itself?
