A counter question: Why do we need a version controlled .gitignore in a
SVN checkout at all? What is the point of that? Is that a file necessary
to document the development process of MPlayer, or just a file useful for
some of the developers (and not so for others)?

Anyway, thanks to Clément's hint I realized that you can have multiple git
ignore files and that it doesn't have to be just .gitignore. So I moved my
patterns and am fine now.
