On my box, if I set it up to use the old PCI sound card, ALSA init just
fails, and I got no sound at all. I admit my ALSA setup is pretty bizarre,
but I believe there are other things out there that adapt their behaviour on
the number of channels. I do not have time right now to test on other boxes
with a more standard setup.

As a matter of curiosity, what kind of audio chip does the box you are
testing on have? My guess is that your chip itself supports 6 channels, even
if the surrounding hardware (speakers, and maybe even plugs) does not.
