Diego asked me to elaborate on the differences to the current packaging:

 - seperate mplayer, mencoder and mplayer-gui package (current: single
   package)
 - no debconf questions during installation
 - parallel builds
 - debian/changelog gets generated, so upgrades via an archive is
   possible
 - doc-base integration
 - 'distro' debian/copyright file

I think these are the most important items.
