That sounds a lot like installing an exhaust pipe and a steering wheel
on your bicycle so that it better imitates driving a car...

The only reason I EVER used such functionality with my widescreen TV was
because there is no zoom capability...  With MPlayer hooked up to my TV,
I find the pan&scan buttons infinitely better.

LIRC allows you to define multiple keys assigned to a single button,
which will be used in sequence.
