This is mixing things together, namely
1) things that would be useful for command-line MPlayer but are not
there - those obviously have nothing whatsoever to do with a Gui.
It seems to me that all examples you gave fall in that category so I
don't see how they would be an argument for "tighter GUI integration"

2) Stuff that is available in MPlayer/gmplayer but not exported via the
slave interface. Those certainly are worth investigating and probably
more work than actually difficult

3) Stuff that is just not really practical to implement with separate
processes. That is mostly a matter of convenience and could probably by
solved by providing appropriate wrapper-libraries
