What else do you suggest he could have done? Give up on doing anything
when Ivan sends some trolling mails with no real content?

How was the way he did it provocative? He posted a patch, and if Ivan
had any reasons why not to apply it he could have posted them.

There was actually little any technically relevant discussion; after all
the reason that there was controversy at all was Ivan's trolling and
refusal to give reasons. Half of the thread was compn sending some
rather pointless/clueless mails. So I view this "incident" mostly as
mailing list trolling.
