Yes, it is possible to replace xserver. But it is difficult to deploy this
solution to the end users and make sure that they all get it installed.
It all involves all the troubles of effectively maintaining a distro which is
a bit out of my scope.

Sure, but it depends on ARM optimized scaler which needs to be added
to ffmpeg/libswscale first. And this scaler needs a bit more work to get it
clean, reliable and well commented (in other words, ready for submitting 
to ffmpeg). Also some more optimizations still can be done.
