This has also been my experience, even with alsa versions that were ime 
"buggy". As long as you override the defaults and use the hardware 
device directly, first killing anything that is holding and blocking 
the hardware device, alsa works beautifully.

Very long time ago MPlayer used the first hardware device by default 
instead of the alsa "default" device, which these days on most systems, 
if the user hasn't changed settings, goes through the software mixing 
thingy..
