2002 is the operative word here, things have indeed changed.  With the
advent of multicore CPUs threading looks more interesting in 2007 than in
2002.

Now such a change is likely to be invasive and there is no guarantee
that it will be accepted.  We'll have to see.  But it's not a
non-starter to begin with.
