I dont know anything about the GUI code, so i can't say anything about
that.
The x11_common.c patch looks good, beside, that window allocation
should be IMHO within x11_common.c for _all_ x11 modules. This
would enable us to do the window switching for all modules
at once, just by sending en Expose event to ourselfs.

I'll have a quick look at that this evening.
If i commit something, consider it as done, if not,
then it's more complex than i thougt.
