eating CPU on that RedHat?

This result is also very stupid, a codec always performs nearly the
same, OS nevertheless.

I suggest you shutdown XFree86, and all unimportant tasks. Ideal
would be if you booted with init=/bin/sh on both OSes. (hdparm allowed)

Extra: try other Linux distribs (LFS, Debian, etc)
