I am working on a similar project to mplayer (when it comes to
startup and runtime configuration). When I started the project I had
a look at configuration and communication packages
already available and came across these two:

http://xmlsoft.org/
http://www.xmlrpc.com/

Personally I have never seen a better way to do configuration before.
Only problem is i guess that one have to drop the commandline
parameters, but I won't miss them too much.
