Well, if the administrator of the system knows *all* smb shares of the
entire network and updates them every day, he could do that, yes. But
in lots of configurations this is just too labor-intensive, if not
impossible. And even if it is possible, in lots of cases it isn't
wanted, because it could be seen as a security threat, and could make
the system crash. So some alternative way is indeed useful.
