this is blatently wrong. slackware or any homebrew system will work
fine without perl. debian has ridiculous degrees of perl dependency,
yes, but that doesn't mean everyone does. then there's *bsd as well...

the only problem i've ever encountered with not having perl is that
some stupid packages (either openssl or openssh iirc) have perl
dependencies in their build processes -- they use a huge perl script
to put the configured paths into the man pages when a one-line sed
script would do the exact same thing -- but something to the effect of
"ln -sf /bin/true stupid_fixpaths_script" typically eliminates the
problem.
