Yes. There is the distributed.net "cracking" client, which uses idle CPU
to crack a key. See what would happen if programs would implement a feature
to minimize their CPU usage in favor of dnetc :)

Yes, xscreensaver is unfortunately completely dumb.
Anyway, if one really wants to "save" the screen, there's DPMS..
If one wants to watch nice (dumb) screensavers instead of
working/gaming/going away from computer, use xscreensaver, but NOT MPlayer.
