the official releases are compiled using mingw.

that tutorial is a bit outdated.
get the latest 'current' mingw and msys versions.
i dont think libtheora is needed
mplayer isnt on cvs anymore, but svn now.

you can find some of the external libs precompiled at:
http://oss.netfarm.it/mplayer-win32.php
also up-to-date mingw mplayer builds :)
