Nothing. It works with any vo that actually plays movies, but qdv is tried
first,so I have to select it, when I would rather just type "mplayer
<movie-name>".

When I typed "mplayer pond.dv" it crashed before displaying anything. I
tried various combinations and discovered that -vc qdv works with -vo gl,
gl2, SDL and winvidix (just tried winvidx a few minutes ago), but not with
directx. On the other hand, -vc ffdv seems to work all the time, and -vc
mcdv never works, even though "mplayer -vc help" says:

mcdv vfw working MainConcept DV Codec [mcdvd_32.dll]

If you try it yourself, I am sure that you will get the same results. I have
not checked the documentation to see if there is a way to make ffdv the
default DV codec, but I will.
