I got a new binary and have installed it:

MPlayer Sherpya-MinGW-20060323-4.1.0 (C) 2000-2006 MPlayer Team
CPU: Intel Pentium 4/Celeron D Prescott; Xeon Nocona (Family: 15,
Stepping: 4)
CPUflags:  MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 0 SSE2: 0
Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX MMX2 3DNow 3DNowEx

There were 3 choices for the binary on the website:

mplayer-k7-cvs-20060323.7z [2.84 mb] - Mar 23, 2006
mplayer-p3-cvs-20060323.7z [2.90 mb] - Mar 23, 2006
mplayer-p4-cvs-20060323.7z [2.75 mb] - Mar 23, 2006

I wasn't sure which one was the right one, so I got the
mplayer-k7-cvs-20060323.7z

In that case, check out the "related projects" link on the MPlayer home
page. You can download recent binaries from the "MPlayer on Win32"
project.

It can be a little tiresome to set up your system to compile MPlayer,
but
you only have to do it once.
