Okay, I must admit that I was a little lazy, too ;) but I really
wasn't sure whether that patch was going into the right direction at
all. get_space should rather return correct values at all times.

Anyhow, I've also put together the basic things needed for the
position notifications (just in case someone else was thinking about
doing this). It is not yet perfect, but I will send a patch if it
works well
