Thanks for the response, but, as you say, it doesn't fix the problem. :)

I tried something like that earlier. mencoder acts like it encodes ok,
but mplayer can't find a video stream.

This is actually my first time trying -of lavf, so I don't know if/when
it got broken. I'll keep poking around, but I probably won't be able to
find a fix.
