Yes. Put the following line into your mplayer config file:
ac=-mp3,

That comma at the end is important; it means, "try the other codecs".
On the command line, it would be "mplayer -ac -mp3,".

...better would be to figure out why your distro has (or flushes out) a
bug somewhere. I really have no idea, aside from the possibilities Rich
and Tobias suggested.
