Here it is:

AMD Athlon XP, 2.4.16 kernel, libc.so.5.4.46,
latest Debian SID, ASUS-V7100 (GeF2MX), but
probably none of them has anything to do with
it.

The CD is an XCD made like
# mode2cdmaker -m movie.avi -f movie.sub -o foo -v title -l -a -q &&
cdrdao write --device 0,0,0 --speed 4 --eject foo.cuo

cd contents when mounted via cdfs:
$ ls /cdfs
videocd-1.mpeg  videocd-2.mpeg
$ file videocd-1.mpeg videocd-1.mpeg: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI
$ file videocd-2.mpeg
videocd-2.mpeg: ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem data
'TITLE                          '

player output (-v -vcd 1 && -v -vcd 2) attached; 2nd
track contains avi. w/o a break signal this one would've
run forever showing the best screensaver (black).

playing as mentioned before (see my letter @ 10.25/17:00)
worked perfectly.

so it seems like a bug. happy huntin':
