What do you mean by that? I compile weekly both x264 and mplayer,
freshly pulled from svn/git, and have not encountered a single case
yet where my x264 has not been detected by mplayer's configure

And what is this 2 years? The configure script is constantly checked
and improved by Diego. Do you think he'll just leave it broken like
that for such a long time? I don't think so.

mplayer doesn't 'install' any x264 routines. x264 is a separate
project which mplayer uses. In fact, mplayer doesn't even need x264,
it's mencoder that relies on it for encoding and as I said previously,
if you have multiple versions of x264, it is possible for configure to
fail in case it detects an older x264 first, even if you may have a
much newer x264... In such cases, uninstall all instances of x264
(which includes its libs and header files too, not just binary) but
keep only the one you need (which should be the most recent x264
version)
