It gives example command lines for doing certain functions, which is
primarily to help the user understand how the software works. This is
useful and still appropriate for a man page. General video encoding
information that is not specific to MEncoder does not belong in the man
page. A few of your suggestions do directly relate to MEncoder and
MPlayer and should be included, but general knowledge like what variable
frame rate and telecine are do not help one understand how to use
MEncoder. As I stated before, links on MPlayer's home page would make
more sense.
