Hi everyone,

I'd like to backup some dvds as divx but i still don't know which
codecs and settings to use.

I use lavc for testing purpose as I know most of divx players are able
to decode it. I have no idea about others codecs such as x264 and so
on.

#!/bin/bash

VBITRATE=800
SOURCE=/home/me/my_dvd
OUTFILE=test.avi
AUDIOCHANNEL=128
ABITRATE=224 #(no way to set vbr for ac3 codec ?)

    mencoder dvd://1 -dvd-device $SOURCE -ovc frameno -oac lavc
-lavcopts acodec=ac3:abitrate=$ABITRATE -aid $AUDIOCHANNEL -quiet -o
frameno.avi

    mencoder dvd://1 -dvd-device $SOURCE -ovc lavc -lavcopts
vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=$VBITRATE:vhq:vqmin=2:vqmax=31:v4mv:mbd=2:trell:cmp=3:subcmp=3:mbcmp=3:vlelim=-4:vcelim=9:lumi_mask=0.05:dark_mask=0.01:vpass=1:autoaspect
-vf scale=640:400 -oac copy -quiet -o /dev/null

    mencoder dvd://1 -dvd-device $SOURCE -ovc lavc -lavcopts
vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=$VBITRATE:vhq:vqmin=2:vqmax=31:v4mv:mbd=2:trell:cmp=3:subcmp=3:mbcmp=3:vlelim=-4:vcelim=9:lumi_mask=0.05:dark_mask=0.01:vpass=2:autoaspect
-vf scale=640:400 -oac copy -quiet -o $OUTFILE

These settings are quite good but I'm sure there's a way to improve
quality... even if encoding is running at 1fps...

Do you have an idea ?

Many thanks,
Zelos
