[I'd like to create an avi or like that can be played on most of
w*ndows boxes, i.e. with W. Media Player...]

Awfully sorry, however, it is still not clear for me:

* I usually create avi file like below
mencoder -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:... -ffourcc XVID -o sg.avi
but WMP v9.x does not seem to know it (Win2000)

* so what is the preferred codec and options for this task?
(I have tried vcodec=msmpeg4v2, too -- no success. Maybe the FFOURCC 
should have been changed...)

I test these from QEMU with a minimal install of win2000 w. SP4.
(Originally this had IE5? and WMP 6.x, but the upgrade to IE6 and WMP 9.x
did not help either...)
