VCR's recorded from one source and played back in a single format to a
single sink. Analog signals are also much less liable to incidental
damage since they do not rely on historical information. There are
myriad sources, hundreds of container/codec combinations, and unpredictable
sources of damage to the stream which must be considered when transcoding
video.
