[MEncoder-users] adding subtitles

Hi folks,

I successfully added subtitles to an mpeg video:

mencoder file.mpg -o file.avi -oac copy -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4 -sub subtitle.srt

It plays back fine on my linux box using mplayer but under windows using windows
media player I only hear sound and no video.

Here are some particulars about the original file:

Playing file.mpg.
MPEG-PS file format detected.
VIDEO:  MPEG1  352x240  (aspect 12)  29.970 fps  1150.0 kbps (143.8 kbyte/s)
==========================================================================
Opening audio decoder: [mp3lib] MPEG layer-2, layer-3
AUDIO: 44100 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 224.0 kbit/15.87% (ratio: 28000->176400)
Selected audio codec: [mp3] afm:mp3lib (mp3lib MPEG layer-2, layer-3)

Basically I want to do some video titling using linux tools but have
some certainty that the end result will be watchable by windows users.

Thanks in advance...
Mark
