I (mostly) don't use Gmail because I value my privacy more than the
convenience of GMail's web interface. But realistically, not everyone can
afford to access an outbound MTA that:
- supports SMTP,
- allows sending email with a domain not tied to the local ISP,
- does not mangle email bodies,
- is not firewalled,
- is not blacklisted because of spam from adjacent IP addresses.
Not everyone can switch ISP to fix that or set up a VPN. In fact, I could not
change ISP if I wanted to as my apartment building's housing corporation has
an exclusive contract with just the one.
And then entire countries cannot use SMTP out of residential Internet because
of low reputation IP address ranges. Gmail and its competitors are completely
besides the point. It's not the "vibe coders", "lusers" and clueless "newbies"
that you're eliminating here (we've seen vibe coders use FFmpeg-devel just
fine), it's quite literally whole residential populations of entire countries.
