The first related commit stated:

I have re-tested, and with patch #1 in this series the output is correct for
both formats. So unless Stefano, who replaced the × with x, objects, I would
prefer it to stay that way: using x for × is ugly. I intend to check the
automated result on the site if it is applied, just to be sure.
