Well we could provide a pointer to automated snapshots from the download 
page if that makes you think that will help people not used to fetch 
from svn.

gitweb already provides that feature e.g.

http://git.ffmpeg.org/?p=ffmpeg;a=snapshot;sf=tgz


Would that be enough in your opinion?
